Working as an illustrator in Europe, he produced posters for theater, film, and anime before becoming a picture-book author. In 1985 he moved to the United States. In 1996 he won the Japan Picture Book Award for Translation for A Taste of the Moon (tr. 2013). His other titles include Niji-iro no hana (Rainbow-Colored Flowers), Fiabo: Ohanashi no suki na makka na sakana (Fiabo: the Bright Red Fish Who Loved Stories), Koneko kyū-hiki gūgūgū (Nine Sleeping Kittycats), and many others.)
