520 _aMicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs (~21-25 nucleotides) that post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression. By interacting with specific binding sites in their mRNA targets, miRNAs can decrease translation efficiency or trigger mRNA degradation. miRNAs have been implicated in a variety of biological functions. It remains largely unclear to what extent microRNAs regulate protein expression during brain development and how this influences brain function. miRNA 135 (miR-135) appears as a very attractive candidate that may be important for neuronal function. Besides being enriches in the brain, many of its predicted targets are related with synaptic function and neuronal development.
